A CIRCLE OF SONGWRITERS
Two days ago I held my first Songwriter Circle meeting in Frome, in my birth county of Somerset. I admit I felt a combination of nervousness, and excitement. Although I’d had a reasonable amount of interest, I just didn’t know for sure how many people would actually turn up.
From around 7:30pm people started arriving, and they kept arriving until there were 15 people ready to see what the evening had to offer. I could not have asked for a better first gathering!
The intention for the Songwriter circle is to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for people of all abilities to share a whole song, a song idea or even just some lyrics to get feedback and/or inspiration if you’re stuck.
After some brief introductions from everyone, it became clear that people really needed this new event as a place to bring new ideas and get some good feedback perhaps before taking their song to an open mic or elsewhere. It also became clear that some people struggle with lyrics and some with music, so already potentially collaboration opportunities were presenting themselves to the group.
I offered to share first just to get the ball rolling, and launched bravely into the chorus of a new song called “Big Sky Dreaming”. The chorus was all I had, and I explained roughly where the idea had come from and how I’d only got as far as the chorus. This opened up the discussion about how I go about writing, and how I might expand the seed idea into a full song.
We then spent the next two hours hearing a combination of spoken lyrics, poetry, and full songs from ten different people. After each I hope I did a fairly good job of offering and encouraging others to provide supportive and helpful comments on what we liked and what could be done to make the song work even better.
If I could have changed anything, it would have been good to have a wider range of ages present and the gender balance was extremely unbalanced with 14 blokes and 1 lone Sara Vian - a local singer songwriter herself.
All in all, I was really happy with the way the evening went, and I received lots of supportive feedback from those attending.
If you are interested or know someone who you think might benefit from coming along, please do share this post / blog and or the event details below.
